I'm probably the oldest of this generation of railfans - dwindling as it is - that simply would rather get in a car and have a look at a location or a branchline (or what's left of it) than try to travel it on a tour.
You'd enjoy the northwest branches for that reason. No tours obviously, but standing at somewhere like Cryon, or Garah and looking around, seeing nothing except the horizon and thinking back to when the railway was the only way to get somewhere out here, really makes you wonder just how it got to where it is today. Somewhat depressing when you realise that...

Add a couple of mini trips from my recent overseas trip. The Milan Metro and lightrail in Hanover.

The other one I travelled a few times is one of my all time favourites. Sydney to Newcastle. That is one of the most horn railway rides so use the trains you buggers and don't go driving to Newcastle. The Hawkesbury and Mullet creek is an absolute favourite with me. Only bloody sparks these days, but still reminds me of the 50s when I would go to Sydney behind a 32 in an end platform carriage. Shut the windows before you go into the tunnels. Rodney Dangerfield

What about the XPT? I spose that's better than nothing.

At least you've got a good assortment of diesels passing through, even if ya can't ride behind any of them.

The sparks in the old days* were pretty damn horn too. There's something about a U-boat at speed that, in many ways, even beats steam. And I'd give my left nut to go up that way again in a side corridor car hauled window-rattlingly off the mark by a nice, torquey 46 cl.

Anyhoo...

Probably the best trip I went on is one I'll never remember. Back in the mid-50s, the folks moved from Atherton, FNQ to Chiltern, Vic. At 4 months of age, mum took me and some of the other brats from Cairns to Brisbane, Brisbane to Central, Central to Albury, Albury to Chiltern in one long haul. So I guess I've done the train change at Wallangarra!

Anyway, mum always said sitting on Sydney Central in 1954, on a Sunday, with a crowd of rugrats isn't too much fun.

Driven suburban trains over the entire VR suburban network bieng lucky to drive taits, pacels coaches, harrises, refurbed harrises and fuckin stinkin wont stop comengs. (putting in reverse works ok though)
Driven freight and passes to Warrnabool Dimboola, Woolseley, Warracknabeal, Albury, Bendigo, Leongatha and Taralgon yep saw the end of the L classes also! ran the long Island steely lots before the fuckin fucked out NRC came along! Rodney Dangerfield I even fired down to Timboon twice whilst relieving at Camperdown. Ran the Fyansford pilot heaps as a youngun!
Based at Maryborough gone to Piangle, Robinvale (Shocker Rodney Dangerfield ) Kulwin, Yelta, Panitya, Murtoa on the Dunolly Ararat SG link Castlemaine via newstead and of course Geelong.
Melb via Bacchus Marsh and Geelong.
Now I'm just a 1 track wonder going from Moolabin to Maryborough west and return via Sherwood or South Brisbane and you know what? I enjoy this the most of all!
Driven all trains the Contrans, Overland, Vinelander, spirit of progress, southern Aurora, the intercapital dayight and every thing else in between. Aint I lucky! Smile

edited cause I keep remembering other places I bin!

Probably better than today, I'd wager. It always makes me sad to come in over the flying junctions on a Sunday and see the entire country terminal devoid of trains. Walk up to the concourse, and there'll be a couple of TOs standing around, maybe a handful of passengers here and there, and a whole sense of bleak. At least, in '54, there'd have been more of a buzz - even on a Sunday. Most stuff to keep the anklebiters amused, at any rate.

I used to love that place as a kid. Nearly every platform having a U-boat or maybe a name train going off to some place I'd never been, mad old Greek cunts playing chicken with the public as they careered about at hight speed in their luggage chariots, a big fuck-off refreshment room and a bar. I'm sorry I missed the trams.
