On the 17th, I'll be hiding in the bush doing electrical stuff miles from Sydney. Then I'll have an ale or two.

I've just got back from 3 days in Adelaide, I'm mentally drained from the traffic and the squillions of people there.

And it's the Big Day.

To our Roman Catholic bastards (and other interested "people of the book" ones): I have my disagreements, but today is yours. Enjoy.

May it be a positive time for your own spiritual development, and for the spiritual and social (sorry, but I must) development of your faith.

Had to laugh this morning actually. News report on SUNRISE about the POPEs movements today.

Quote:
Come across the harbour by boatercade (I kid you not (spelling of non-word)) where he will transfer to the POPEMOBILE.

For some strange reason I immediatley thought of him transferring via the POPEPOLE.

Working at Circular Quay, we have been getting regular official updates of what disruptions we could expect, so I'm quite familiar with the so called word boat-a-cade ... as you can see, it has many spellings. In fact, I was about to mention it in the "I want to KILL" thread.

In our close to the action position, I saw a motorcade where the pope was likely in one of the limos (it was the full deal like for dubbya), the floatilla duck around Circurlar Quay on it's way to Darling Harbour, and then the official parade with the popemobile.

I came up with an interesting thought today (that probably dooms me to hell) - the pope is a lot like Doctor Who ... keeps regenerating, and the popemobile looks like a telephone booth on the back of a ute. Rodney Dangerfield Please see the humourous side of this, not the offensive one ...

I must say it was nice to note that some Islamic schools in Sydney have billeted Catholic pilgrims.

A simple gesture to tell intolerance to go and resoundingly fuck itself. Should be more of it.

Yesterday was actually the best drive to work I've had in a long time. I couldn't even laugh at the suckers on there way into the city - there weren't many, and those that were there were going as fast as I was.

Had to laugh a few days back, Bwanette works in the city and got an email from the bosses saying they could go out on the balcany and have a look as his holiness rolled by, encouraging them to come early and leave early, all that shit, the funny bit was the subject line: "Pope-on-a-boat"

On 702 yesterday arvo, Angela Catterns had a house band in the studio just mucking about - at a caller's request, they did a few bars of Pope on the Water. Heh.

A shot from yesterday's activities (honestly, didn't you know George Street had signs in other languages that English?)

Like Biqua said, please look at the humorous side.

I know that this is a bit after the event, but one thing that has stuck in my mind about WYD (from a rail point of view) was how well it all ran (shades of the Olympics). Also, say what you like about the pilgrims, they were by far the best-behaved passengers I've ever had to deal with at a special event. Like Biqua, I was working at Circular Quay on Thursday, 17/7 (it was a day in - I'd managed to avoid most of the brouhaha by means of backshift at Berowra). At one point, I had a large group of returning pilgrims (they'd seen the Pope and were heading around to Town Hall) all lined up on Platform 1 as an M-Bug comes in. I can see that there's a shitload of pilgrims on board, all wanting to get off. The lot I've got all surge forward, straight for the door. I just hold my furled flag out - AND THEY ALL OBEDIENTLY STOP!!! Rodney Dangerfield Those pilgrims on board pour off, and I turn and say, "OK, now you can get on" - and they DO - neatly and orderly, two by two, with a chorus of "thank you". By God, it was a shock to the system, I'm telling you - any local crowd in this situation would have shoulder-charged me aside, and shoved the flag stick up my left nostril (or whatever orifice was conveniently at hand), while shoving anybody attempting to get off back inside!!

As to the picture above, how many people again gave "Jedi Knight" as their religious affiliation at the last census.......? Shit-eating grin
